SXSW EDU 2024

Teaching Trauma-Informed Journalism in a New Era of Racism

Description:

There has been an uprising in social injustices over the past several years. From Black deaths at the hand of police and the physical brutalization of AAPI individuals by their so-called fellow Americans, Gen Z is reckoning with trauma as they enter newsrooms across the country. In particular, young storytellers who hail from, and/or identify with, these communities are experiencing mental anguish. YR Media will lead a discussion with Gen Z storytellers, educators, and media executives to discuss trauma informed solutions and outcomes.

Takeaways

  1. "Objectivity" is dead. Journalists are human beings and should be taught to bring their whole selves to reporting, without sacrificing accuracy.
  2. Newsrooms must reflect America in terms of workforce makeup and these employees must not be asked to “turn off” who they are and where they come from.
  3. Young BIPOC storytellers are not willing to work in places that do not value them as human beings. Newsrooms and their products must change--hear how.
